Kyle Shankar recently traded a decade-long career as an IT consultant and Project Manager for the uncertain path of entrepreneurship, following both heart and conviction to create social and ecological impact. Trained as a commercial engineer (KU Leuven, MSc in Business & Information Systems), Kyle spent nearly ten years climbing the corporate ladder, only to be confronted with a lingering why.
That search led him back to his own childhood - growing up in a family where the odds were often stacked against him - and to a clear realization: a safe and healthy home is the foundation for growth. Out of this conviction, he founded Behyve, a venture dedicated to building homes that are ethically responsible, aesthetically daring, and financially accessible. Guided by biophilic principles and minimalism (frequently found in Japanese architecture), Behyve designs significantly smaller modular homes that free space for nature and community. The aim is not to maximize square meters, but to maximize the value of every square meter we truly need.
What does it mean to be a hero? A hero is perhaps just someone who understands that he or she is only a single person in need of support from others. An individual with a desire to give to others, to create value for others, but who knows that true value only comes when created together.
I applied to "Heroes of Our Time" in search of a community with a common goal: creating value for our society and environment. I know that by founding Behyve, with the aim of making healthy homes accessible, I can’t achieve this alone. I am looking for designers, makers, and architects who feel inspired by this common goal and want to help achieve it together. Maybe a hero doesn’t want to be called a “hero” :p but simply someone who wants to help out.

Behyve - homes designed by nature: One of the current lead projects is designing a new kindergarden for the Steinerschool Teunisbloem. Vlaio research project: applying biophilic design to compact homes (<50m2) to create a comfortable indoor climate.
